All that’s required is a narrative of past events in roughly chronological order (which is what we have in vv.1-4), interrupted by an embedded present, after which the narrative continues. Thus rendered “shone”, the scene would be the confrontation in the Garden after the Fall between the Light and the “darkness”, the first couple in their resistance during their interview by the Light.
